It's easy to fall for sea otters look at those curious faces and that expertly coiffed fluff. Like us, they cradle young ones on their chests and use tools to whack open their favorite shellfish. But they are born in the water and spend most of their time there. They forage for urchins, crabs, clams, and other undersea creatures, and they wrap their bodies in kelp to anchor themselves while resting. Once nearly extinct because of fur trading their luxurious fur is made of up to one million hairs per square inch sea otters can today be found in coastal waters from California to Japan, where their presence has proven vital to a healthy ecosystem. |
